If you are new to the construction industry it is always better to come prepared so that you don’t get sent home. Here are some tips on how to prepare for the first day on the construction site.
These tips can prove helpful regardless of the type of position you are starting:
Tip1: Know your work location
The worst thing you can do on the first day is show up late because you couldn’t “find the place” that is never a good excuse so be sure to take the time in advance to figure out how to get to the job site. Know how long it will take and tack on a few minutes to that time for good measure. Remember just because the drive was 15 minutes when you first drove it does not mean it will be 15 minutes on the day. Always give yourself a little extra time and know exactly where you are supposed to be.
Tip 2: Dress for the job
This cannot be stressed enough. If you are in a business environment you would dress in a suit. For the construction site you want to be dressed for construction work. This means the proper safety boots, safety vest/jacket, appropriate tools if needed, and the correct clothing for the job. Depending on the type of construction job you are going to be doing will determine the type of clothing. A good rule of thumb is to wear safety work wear that is comfortable and durable. Worse thing you can do is arrive on the job site in clothes that won’t last the work day.
Tip 3: Come to work prepared
This is similar to tip 2 that talks about dressing for the job but in this case what we are talking about is coming prepared. Make sure you have done your research in advance so that your foreman is not needing to run through too many of the basics with you. If you are unsure about what is expected see if you can find out in advance. Of course this is not always possible, so when it doubt don’t be afraid to ask. A general rule of thumb is to come to work as prepared as possible. Have any important documents ready that you might need and also have any tools that are required for the job available. If you don’t have the tools be sure that they will be available on the job site before hand. We like to recommend having your own hi visibility jacket/vest and hard hat just in case. After all it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
