Frequently Asked Questions

When are emergency eyewash stations or safety showers required?

Emergency eyewash and safety shower equipment may be required where workers could be exposed to hazardous chemicals, dust, corrosive substances or other materials that could injure the eyes or skin.

The correct equipment and placement should be based on workplace risk assessments, safety data sheets and site procedures.

What is the difference between an eyewash station and a safety shower?

Eyewash stations are designed to flush contaminants from the eyes and face, while safety showers provide full-body rinsing where larger chemical or hazardous substance exposure may occur. Some workplaces require both types of equipment depending on the risks present.

Should emergency eyewash equipment be used alongside First Aid supplies?

Yes. Emergency wash equipment forms one part of workplace emergency preparedness. First aid kits, burn care, wound care and other response supplies should also be readily available and maintained according to the hazards and needs of the workplace.
