Frequently Asked Questions About Intrinsically Safe Lighting

What does intrinsically safe mean, and why is it important?

Intrinsically safe equipment is designed for use in hazardous or explosive atmospheres by limiting the electrical and thermal energy that could otherwise ignite flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust.

This is important in workplaces such as underground mining, oil and gas, chemical processing and fuel handling, where ordinary electrical equipment may present an ignition risk.

IECEx provides an international certification framework for equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres.

Where are intrinsically safe headlamps and torches commonly used?

Intrinsically safe lighting is commonly used in hazardous locations such as underground mines, refineries, oil and gas facilities, chemical processing plants, fuel handling areas, wastewater facilities and other environments where explosive gases, vapours or combustible dusts may be present.

How do I know if a headlamp or torch is suitable for a hazardous area?

Check the product’s certification, hazardous-area classification and Ex markings against the requirements of the workplace. Different hazardous zones and atmospheres require different equipment ratings, so site risk assessments and workplace procedures should always be followed.

IECEx-certified equipment is independently assessed against relevant international standards for use in explosive atmospheres.
